Monastrell.

The Spanish name for Mourvèdre — but with its own old-vine identity in Jumilla, Yecla, and Valencia.

The character

Monastrell is the Spanish name for Mourvèdre — the same grape that builds Provence’s Bandol (see /encyclopedia/grapes-encyclopedia/mourvedre-encyclopedia/) and the southern Rhône GSM blends. In Spain, the grape is grown most prominently in the hot, dry interior of southeastern Spain — particularly Jumilla, Yecla, Bullas, and Alicante — where old-vine, low-yielding sites produce wines of remarkable concentration that have been one of Spain’s best-value categories for the last two decades.

Where it grows best

Southeastern Spain: Jumilla DOP, Yecla DOP, Bullas DOP, Alicante DOP, Valencia DOP. The combination of hot, arid climate, calcareous soils, and old bush-vines produces concentrated, structured wines. Smaller plantings in Catalonia’s Penedès, Murcia, and the Castilla-La Mancha region. Old-vine Monastrell sites can be 50-100+ years old.

How it tastes

Blackberry, black plum, black olive, dried herbs (rosemary, thyme), leather, tobacco, sometimes a smoky-meaty character that comes from the variety. Tannin is firm and grippy; acid is moderate; alcohol typically 14-15.5%. Old-vine Monastrell from a top producer (Casa Castillo, Juan Gil, Bodegas Olivares, El Nido, Castaño) shows much more concentration and complexity than the everyday Jumilla style.

How it ages

Top Spanish Monastrell ages fifteen to twenty-five years. The wines often drink well in their first decade thanks to the ripe fruit, then develop a savory, dried-meat, smoky tertiary complexity in their second. Casa Castillo’s Pie Franco — from ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines on sandy soils — is one of the great age-worthy Spanish reds.

What to pair with

Grilled lamb. Slow-cooked stews. Spanish charcuterie and aged Manchego. Roasted pork. Game. Anything that handles serious tannin and pairs with the Mediterranean herb-garrigue profile. Monastrell from southeastern Spain is one of the great-value serious red categories in the world.
