Chianti Classico.
The original Chianti zone between Florence and Siena — Sangiovese country at its most food-friendly and historically grounded.
Geography
Chianti Classico is the central, original Chianti zone — the area enclosed by the Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) on every bottle. It runs roughly from south of Florence to north of Siena, through the communes of Greve in Chianti, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, and others. The terrain is hilly, with vineyards typically planted between 250 and 600 metres of elevation on galestro (a friable schist-and-clay marl) and alberese (limestone) soils.
Classification
Three quality tiers exist within Chianti Classico. The base Annata (current vintage) is meant for early drinking. Riserva requires at least 24 months aging, three months in bottle, and 12.5% minimum alcohol — more structured and built for ten-plus years. Gran Selezione, introduced in 2014, requires 30 months aging and must come from a single estate; it sits at the top of the pyramid.
Style of the wines
Sangiovese-dominant (minimum 80% by law). The trademark profile is tart red cherry, dried herbs (oregano, rosemary, sage), tomato leaf, leather, and a savory tobacco note. Tannin is firm and dusty; acidity is high. Wines from cooler, higher-elevation sites tend toward perfume and tension; wines from the warmer southern sub-zones lean toward density. Riserva and Gran Selezione add complexity from extra aging.
How they age
Annata-level Chianti Classico drinks well at two to six years. Riserva from a good producer hits its stride between five and fifteen. Gran Selezione is built for fifteen to twenty-five. With age, the red fruit dries and darkens, dried herbs deepen, and tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and dried tomato emerge.
Producers we know
Fèlsina is our reference — based in Castelnuovo Berardenga at the southern end of the zone, working a Riserva that punches well above its price. Other Chianti Classico producers worth knowing: Castell’in Villa, Monteraponi, Castello di Rampolla, Isole e Olena, Fontodi, San Giusto a Rentennano. Browse the full Tuscany hand at /regions/tuscany/.
