Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Appellation · Southern Rhône

Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The southern Rhône’s flagship appellation — Grenache-led blends from the famous galets terraces, on the ruins of an Avignon papal castle.

Geography

Châteauneuf-du-Pape sits on the left (east) bank of the Rhône in the southern half of the valley, on land that was the summer residence of the popes during the Avignon Papacy in the 14th century. The vineyards are best known for the galets roulés — large rounded stones rolled smooth by ancient riverbeds and now covering much of the appellation’s surface. The galets retain heat through the day and reflect it onto the vines at night, accelerating ripening. The appellation also has significant sandy, limestone, and clay-influenced sites — the soil diversity contributes to the stylistic range of the wines.

The grapes

Up to 13 different grape varieties are permitted (technically 18, counting white and pink mutations separately). The dominant red grape is Grenache (see /encyclopedia/grapes-encyclopedia/grenache-encyclopedia/), typically blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. The ‘Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc’ from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and Picpoul Blanc is a small but increasingly respected category. Top producers blend across multiple varieties and multiple soil types.

Style of the wines

Châteauneuf-du-Pape red: ripe strawberry, raspberry, dried herbs (garrigue), white pepper, leather, with alcohols routinely 14.5-15.5%. The wines are full-bodied but not particularly tannic — the structure comes from alcohol, glycerol, and concentration. Sandy-soil wines (like Château Rayas) are lighter, more aromatic, more elegant. Galet-stone-influenced wines (the more typical CdP style) are denser and warmer. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is glycerol-rich, beeswax-and-honey-forward, and unlike anything else in southern French wine.

How they age

Top Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a great vintage ages thirty-plus years. Château Rayas in particular is one of the longest-lived southern Rhône wines and develops a remarkable savory, dried-flower complexity. The 2020, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2000, 1998, 1990, 1989 are all legendary.

Producers we know
