Rioja Alta.
The historical and stylistic heart of Rioja — the cooler, higher-altitude western half where the great long-aging Reservas and Gran Reservas are made.
Geography
Rioja Alta is the western (and highest-altitude) of Rioja’s three sub-zones — the others being Rioja Alavesa (just to the north, across the Ebro river in the Basque Country) and Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja, the warmer eastern half). The Alta sits at 400-700 metres of elevation, sheltered from the Atlantic by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The combination of altitude, clay-and-limestone soils, and slightly cooler ripening conditions produces the most structured and age-worthy Tempranillo-led blends in the region — and the classical reference for Rioja in international markets.
The classical style
Rioja Alta is the home of the most traditional Rioja producers — including López de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, and Marqués de Murrieta — whose Gran Reservas are aged for many years in American oak and bottle before release. The traditional Rioja style with its vanilla-and-coconut character (from extended American oak) was largely defined by Alta producers. Modern Rioja from Alta producers like Roda and Artadi takes a slightly different stylistic approach with more French oak influence and shorter pre-release aging.
Style of the wines
Rioja Alta: red and dried cherry, fig, vanilla, coconut, leather, tobacco, dried herbs, often a balsamic-and-soy note from extended bottle age. The classical Gran Reserva style is elegant, integrated, and immediately drinkable on release. Modern Alta wines from Roda, Artadi, and similar producers show more concentration, more black-fruit character, and more French-oak influence. Tannin is moderate; acid is bright; alcohol typically 13-14%.
How they age
Top Rioja Alta Gran Reserva from a great vintage ages forty to fifty years routinely. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva bottles from the 1980s and 1970s drink remarkably today. La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 and 890 similar. The classical Rioja aging system means many Gran Reservas are already a decade old when released.
Producers we know
R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia (the legendary traditionalist — biodynamic-feeling without making a religion of it, the Tondonia, Bosconia, and Cubillo are reference Riojas), La Rioja Alta (especially the Gran Reserva 904 and 890), CVNE / Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (especially Imperial Gran Reserva and Viña Real), Marqués de Murrieta (Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva), Roda, Artadi (especially their old-vine single-vineyard wines).
