Egly-Ouriet Champagne Producer Profile

Egly-Ouriet.

The grower-producer Champagne that started the modern conversation. Ambonnay Grand Cru, old-vine Pinot Noir, oak fermentation, long lees aging.

About the estate

Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village dominated by Pinot Noir.

Egly-Ouriet has been the standard-bearer for grower Champagne since the 1990s. Francis Egly works some of the oldest Pinot Noir parcels in Ambonnay — a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims known for its chalk subsoil and broad-shouldered Pinot Noir character.

Where the bigger Champagne houses prize blending across vintages and villages, Egly does the opposite — fermenting parcel by parcel in oak barrels, aging on lees longer than nearly anyone else in the region (often six to ten years for the vintage cuvées), and bottling with very low dosage. The result is structural, complex, food-driven Champagne that tastes more like white Burgundy at the start and Champagne at the finish.

House style

Chalk, brioche, restrained dosage, real persistence.

Egly Champagne does not fizz at you. It builds. The first sip is structural and savory — chalk, brioche, salted citrus — and the persistence on the palate is one of the longest in non-vintage Champagne. The dosage stays low (typically 4-6 g/L); the wines drink dry without being austere.

These are some of the most age-worthy Champagnes available without going to Krug or DRC pricing. Brut Tradition NV cellars beautifully for ten years; the vintage cuvées for twenty or more.
