Over the past three months we’ve traveled across Portugal, exploring everything from the volcanic vineyards of the Azores to the rugged hillsides of the Dão, Alentejo, Lisbon, and Bairrada. This week, we conclude our Grand European Wine Tour with two of Portugal’s most iconic wine regions: the breathtaking Douro Valley and the vibrant, refreshing wines of Vinho Verde.

From steep terraced vineyards carved into the Douro River to the lush green hills of northwest Portugal, these regions beautifully showcase the country’s remarkable diversity. Join us for our final Portuguese adventure as we pour three outstanding wines and introduce one of Portugal’s favorite summer refreshments, the Port & Tonic.

Vinho Verde

Portugal’s Refreshing Atlantic Classic

Stretching across Portugal’s cool, emerald-green northwest, Vinho Verde is one of Europe’s most refreshing wine regions. Influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, abundant rainfall, and granite soils, the region produces lively wines known for their bright acidity, delicate aromatics, and effortless drinkability.

Despite its name, “Vinho Verde” means “green wine” in the sense of youthful freshness, not color. While many examples are white, the region also produces rosé and red wines. These crisp bottlings have become synonymous with warm-weather dining and are a perfect companion to seafood, salads, and casual gatherings.

One of Portugal’s most recognizable wineries, Casal Garcia has introduced generations of wine lovers to Vinho Verde. Produced by Aveleda, a family-owned winery with more than 150 years of history, Casal Garcia remains a benchmark for bright, approachable Portuguese white wine that captures the freshness and charm of the region.

The Douro Valley

One River, Two Great Traditions

The Douro Valley is one of the world’s oldest officially demarcated wine regions, established in 1756, predating nearly every other famous European appellation. Its dramatic terraces, carved into steep schist hillsides along the Douro River, have earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the Douro has long been celebrated as the birthplace of Port, today it is equally admired for producing some of Portugal’s finest dry wines. Indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rabigato, and Viosinho create wines with remarkable depth, freshness, and a true sense of place.

Featured Producer: Casa Ferreirinha

Casa Ferreirinha is one of Portugal’s most historic and respected wineries, forever linked to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, affectionately known throughout Portugal as “Ferreirinha.” During the 19th century, she transformed the Douro through innovative vineyard management and became one of the country’s most beloved wine pioneers. Today, the winery continues her legacy by producing elegant, expressive Douro wines that balance richness with freshness.

Featured Producer: Pormenor

Founded by winemaker Pedro Coelho, Pormenor represents the modern face of the Douro. Working with old vineyards at higher elevations, the estate emphasizes purity, balance, and minimal intervention. Rather than showcasing sheer power, Pormenor crafts wines that highlight the elegance, mineral character, and vibrant acidity possible in this historic region.

A Portuguese Tradition: Port & Tonic

While Port is often reserved for the end of a meal, the Portuguese have long enjoyed a different tradition during the warmer months: the Port & Tonic.

Made by combining white or ruby-style Port over ice with premium tonic water, finished with a slice of citrus and fresh herbs, it has become Portugal’s answer to the Aperol Spritz or Gin & Tonic. Refreshing, lightly sweet, and wonderfully aromatic, it is the perfect aperitif before dinner or while relaxing on a warm summer evening.

Tonight we’ll be featuring Graham’s Six Grapes Reserva Porto as the base for our own Port & Tonic, offering a fun and delicious way to experience one of Portugal’s most iconic wines in a new light.
