The character
Pinot Meunier is the third grape of Champagne after Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, accounting for roughly a third of total plantings. The variety is a color mutation of Pinot Noir with a distinctive silver underside to the leaves (meunier means 'miller' in French, referring to the flour-dusted appearance). It ripens earlier than Pinot Noir, is more frost-resistant, and produces fresher, fruitier base wines. Historically dismissed as a workhorse, Pinot Meunier has been increasingly bottled as a varietal Champagne by serious growers in the Vallée de la Marne, and the results have been a revelation.
Where it grows best
Champagne, France: most widely planted in the Vallée de la Marne, the western half of the region, where it ripens reliably in cooler, riskier conditions. Also in the Aube and parts of the Côte des Bar. Smaller plantings in Germany (as Müllerrebe or Schwarzriesling), Switzerland, and a tiny amount in California, Oregon, and Australia.
How it tastes
As a still red wine (rare): bright red fruit, raspberry, cherry, sometimes a chalky-mineral note. In Champagne, Meunier contributes red apple, pear, brioche, and a creamy texture that adds richness to a blend. As a varietal Champagne (from growers like José Michel, Christophe Mignon, Egly-Ouriet's Les Vignes de Vrigny, Jérôme Prévost La Closerie, Egly-Ouriet's Brut Tradition has significant Meunier), the wine shows a distinctive yeasty-brioche, red-apple, and white-peach profile that's clearly its own.
How it ages
Champagnes with significant Meunier age fifteen to thirty years. Varietal Meunier Champagnes from top growers age remarkably well: Jérôme Prévost's Les Béguines, made entirely from Pinot Meunier on a single plot in Gueux, is one of the cult bottles of modern grower Champagne and ages twenty-plus years.
What to pair with
Same as other Champagnes: oysters, fried foods, sushi, soft cheeses, brunch eggs, roast chicken. Meunier-led Champagnes pair particularly well with food that has a sweet edge: pumpkin soup, butternut squash, root vegetables, roast chicken with apple stuffing.
