Austrian reds? Amphora-aged Riesling? Explore Austria with Boulder Wine Merchant.

For this week’s offering, we’re taking a deep dive into Austria with some of our favorite wines. But we’ve also thrown in some wines that might surprise those who are just dipping into the category for the first time.

Have you ever tasted a red from Austria? One of the wines featured this week is the Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland 2019 by the amazing Roland Velich (above), a winemaker who has really helped to reshape the way the wine world perceives and enjoys Austrian wine. This gorgeous expression of Blaufränkisch, one of Burgenland’s classic red grapes, is a wine you don’t want to miss.

“Blaufränkisch’s good colour, tannin, and raciness encourage the most ambitious Austrian producers, led by Moric,” write the editors of the Oxford Companion to Wine, “to treat it like single vineyard Burgundy.”

How about an amphora-aged Riesling? Or a classic-style Grüner Veltliner by a natural-focused icon of Austrian viticulture?

This week’s Explore Austrian gives us a taste of the breadth of winemaking there today.
