The Tasting of a Lifetime… A Mind-Blowing Collection of Bordeaux and Burgundy

This past Tuesday, I was one of 12 lucky sommeliers who was invited to take a tour through Bordeaux and Burgundy with wines ranging from the 1975 vintage all the way back to 1825.  Our host has been collecting some of the world's greatest and rarest wines for the past 25 years and wanted to move through a few of the bottles in his cellar that he felt were ready to consume.

A select group of sommeliers were dispatched from around the country and assembled in Aspen to assist with the service and enjoyment of these amazing wines.

Burgundy is too good. It’s not a bad problem to have, but if all you really want is a great glass of wine, you’ll find that the more compelling the wine is, the more hesitant people are to open it. You’re more likely to find a delicious Burgundy entombed in a cellar than glistening in your glass. And that’s not right. Great wine deserves our respect, and even our reverence, but it also deserves to be drunk, to be drunk simply and with joy.

Jeff’s First Trip To Napa, August 2012

I had never been to Napa Valley until I was invited by one of our purveyors to accompany him and a few other guests for a "tasting and buying" trip to some of the wineries he represents in Colorado. Our group was five strong and consisted of two veterans with knowledge of the area and three newbies. The vets were determined to let us experience as much of the flavor of the area as possible.
