Taste Georgian wines this Wednesday, 6/4, 5-7pm, complimentary.

We are excited to invite you to explore one of the most historically significant and unique winemaking traditions on Earth. Next week, we’ll be hosting a tasting featuring four exceptional wines from Georgia – not the Peach State, but the Eurasian region that many consider the birthplace of wine itself.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Georgia has been producing wine for over 8,000 years, making it quite possibly the oldest wine region in the world. This ancient tradition has been remarkably preserved, with Georgian winemakers still employing methods that would be recognizable to their Bronze Age ancestors.

At the heart of Georgian winemaking lies the qvevri – large, egg-shaped clay vessels that are buried underground up to their necks. These remarkable amphorae of varying sizes create the perfect environment for fermentation and aging. The clay’s natural porosity allows for gentle micro-oxygenation while maintaining consistent temperatures year-round. This UNESCO-recognized technique produces wines with extraordinary complexity and longevity.

Georgian winemakers pioneered what we now call “amber wines” or “orange wines.” These are white wines made with extended skin contact in qvevri vessels. Unlike modern white winemaking that separates juice from skins immediately, Georgian tradition keeps white grapes in contact with their skins for months. This process creates wines with a distinctive onion-skin hue, additional tannins, and remarkable depth.

Georgia is home to over 500 indigenous grape varieties, more than any other country besides Italy. During our tasting, you’ll get to know two of the most celebrated.

Rkatsiteli is Georgia’s most planted white variety and one of the world’s oldest cultivated grapes. When made in qvevri with skin contact, Rkatsiteli produces profound amber wines with notes of dried fruits, honey, spices, and white tea-like tannins.

Saperavi is Georgia’s premier red variety. Saperavi wines often display notes of blackberry, plum, leather, and earth.

These wines represent more than just beverages — they’re liquid history, connecting us directly to humanity’s earliest winemaking efforts. Each sip carries the wisdom of countless generations of Georgian vintners who have preserved these techniques through empires, invasions, and the passage of millennia. We hope that you will join us to explore them.
