Sturmwolken Riesling, Pfalz, Germany

Pfalz is an important winemaking region in Germany and one worth keeping your eye on. It’s warmer than Rheinhessen and Mosel to the north and in many ways hase more in common with France’s Alsace than its German counterparts. The nearby Haardt mountain range – a natural continuation of the Alsatian Vosges – works as a natural cool air buffer and allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. They even grow a significant amount of Pinot Noir. But Riesling is still the dominant grape and shows the richness of Alsace with the pretty peach and nectarine notes of Germany. Ever so gently off-dry, this wine goes great with spicy and intensely flavored food.
