Where this wine really delivers, though, is on the generous mid-palate: it is loaded with both fresh and jammy dark cherries accented by baking spices, earth, and leather. Riporta has just enough acidity to balance its copious fruit and finishes with velvety tannins. This tasty expression of Primitivo (known as Zinfandel in California) hails from Salento, at the very tip of the heel of Italy’s boot. The grape exhibits notably more soul and earthiness when grown here. Pair this rich Italian red with pasta Bolognese or eggplant Parmesean.
