The Eguren family produces Protocolo, a terrific value wine, from organically farmed vineyards in Manchuela, Rioja, and Toro. For the first 10-15 years of these vineyards’ lives, the grapes go into Protocolo before they graduate into the estate wines of Rioja and Toro. Protocolo’s organic bottling is a robust and dark-fruited dry wine with velvety tannins. It is unoaked and quaffable; a tasty match with Manchego burgers off the grill.
