Presqu’ile Aligoté 2021, Santa Maria Valley, California

Sometimes referred to as the “3rd grape” of Burgundy, this often overlooked varietal has found a home in sandy soils. This wine has all the classic Aligoté flair with aromas of apple, lemon and slightly herbaceous notes. The palate is structured and crisp. A fine wine to enjoy on its own or pair with a roast chicken or simple cream based pastas.

“Presqu’ile (pres-KEEL), French/Creole meaning peninsula, or literally translated, “ Almost an Island”, was a beloved family gathering place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was a place that engendered a conviviality among family and friends, evoking a warmth of human spirit and a rapport among all who “passed a good time” there. In August of 2005, hurricane Katrina made landfall ending an era. We named our winery in honor of that place and a way of life.

To commemorate the inaugural release of our Aligoté and to pay tribute to our Mississippi golf coast roots, we chose to highlight the alligator on this label, created by Mississippi Gulf coast native artist Walter Iglis Anderson (1903-1965). Anderson, quite possibly Mississippi’s most well known visual artist, made frequent excursions by row boat from his home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi to Horn Island, one of the uninhabited barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Anderson portrayed the scenes on Horn Island in vivid watercolor.

Our family has long admired Anderson’s work and his unique ability to capture the essence if the wild aspects of “The Coast.” Anderson once said, “In order to realize the beauty of humanity, we must realize our relation to nature.” We are grateful to the Anderson Family for a longstanding friendship and allowing our use of his iconic work on this label.”
