Monte Zovo ‘Caligo’ Rosso Veronese, Italy 2018

Caligo Rosso is delicious– think Ripasso, but hails from outside of the Valpoliealla zone. This ripe and friendly red is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella sourced from vineyards in the northern part of Verona. The organically grown grape bunches were left on the vine for 2-4 weeks longer than normal before hand-harvesting, destemming, and pressing. Following fermentation, the wine aged for 12 months in oak. This tasty value is very generous on the palate, offering concentrated flavors of cherries, plums, and dried berries intermixed with spices and black tea. Monte Zovo is produced by the Cottini family, 4th generation winemakers continuing the Veronose tradition. Pair this with a spicy red sauce, whether it’s pizza or pasta puttanesca. It’s also good with mushroom risotto and aged pecorino.
