Mont Gravet Blanc Sauv Blanc/Colombard, Southwest France 2023

Mont Gravet has done it again– their little white is a real winner! It is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Colombard, two grapes that grow well in Southwest France. The Colombard balances the Sauvignon nicely by mellowing out the intensity and adding some weight.  This white wafts from the glass with scents of citrus and white peach.  The palate is bright, fruity, and medium-bodied.  Minerals linger on the finish.  It is unoaked and quite food-versatile.

The Gascony region is well known for its Armagnac,  a distilled grape spirit that undergoes extensive aging in wooden barrels. But it probably won’t surprise you to learn that the locals aren’t drinking the local spirits all day, they need something slightly lower in alcohol to quench their thirst. Therefore, some of the grapes that would usually be destined for the distiller are held back to make dry wine.
