Hiyu Wine Farms Tzum “Atavus” VII Orange, Columbia Gorge, Oregon
“The wines style swayed over time, with Atavus V and VIII representing the apex of richness and this wine representing the other more reserved pole. The solera’s and longer elevage wine have what I would describe as dual aging process. They experience long aging in barrel. This allows them to show like an older wine upon release, but the concentration and stability from the long elevage also allows them to evolve further and for longer than a normal bottling. It’s almost like a doubling of profundity or transcendence. This is a great wine to begin to experience this with. It’s showing these qualities now, but will easily evolve in exciting ways over another decade.
Atavus is a vineyard planted on a ridge above White Salmon Washington in the 1960’s. The site is at 1800 feet, looks straight down on the Columbia and out at Mt. Hood. In the upper field there is a place where Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer are planted side by side. We pick them together, press them together and have aged them together in 600 liter casks since 2013. The wine combines the spicy and perfumed exotiscm of Gewurztraminer and the ethereal power of Pinot as an almost impossibly wild, salty and delicious wine that glows in many shades of orange, peach and bronze. This is a wine for meditation and a wine that has always challenged what we think wine can be.”
