Federico Curtaz “Il Purgatorio” Etna Rosso, 2020, Italy

Born and raised in a family of winemakers, Federico Curtaz is originally from Piedmont, where he worked as an agronomist for none other than Angelo Gaja. Since then, he has traveled and worked as a consultant across Italy sharing his expertise, including several collaborations in Sicily. The island ended up captivating his interest and he made producing wine here his life’s work. Curtaz’s “Il Purgatorio” is entirely Nerello Mascalese from a contrada named Purgatorio on the southern slopes of the Etna. It aged for one year in oak barrels. This is an elegant and savory Etna Rosso that showcases volcanic minerality.  Look for Scents of dried cherries and plums intermixed with spices, Mediterranean herbs, licorice, orange peel, and menthol.  The tannins are finely textured. his is an elegant and mineral-driven wine with elevated acidity and a medium body.
