Domaine Magellan “Le Fruit Défendu” 2021, Languedoc

The red version of “Le Fruit Défendu” is a blend of 90% Cinsault and 10% Syrah.  The sustainably farmed and handpicked grapes were destemmed and fermented in concrete.  It offers juicy cherry fruit on a medium body with velvety tannins.  Most of the impact of this wine is on your back palate.  One of the more inventive vintners in the Languedoc is former Burgundy winemaker Bruno Lafon, who is now based in the high-quality production area of Pezénas. When he bought the estate in 1999, it was a rundown collection of vineyards planted to a multitude of grape varieties; today, Lafon has rehabilitated the estate. Lafon shies away from the use of new oak barrels because he values the pure fruit flavors that his grapes provide. Enjoy this red as you would a Côtes-du-Rhône, with Mediterranean flavors or lamb burgers.
