Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2017
Dalla Valle Vineyards is recognized as one of Napa Valley’s preeminent family-run wineries. Founded in 1986 by Naoko and her late husband Gustav Dalla Valle, on the famed eastern hillsides of Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards has earned acclaim as one of world’s most celebrated wine estates, yielding wines of extraordinary character and complexity, vintage after vintage.
Today, Dalla Valle is guided by the mother-and-daughter team of Naoko and Maya Dalla Valle, who work alongside an illustrious team that includes Consulting Winemaker Andy Erickson, Vineyard Manager Edgar Alfaro, as well as Consulting Enologist Michel Rolland.
The first vintage, produced in 1986, established this wine as an instant Napa Valley classic. Select Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and aged in no greater than 60% new French oak. For close to three decades, this standard-bearer has consistently shown impressive structure and velvety berry flavors.
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grown on their Oakville estate, blended with 15% Cabernet Franc to add complexity and balance. It was aged for 21 months in French Oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration in order to maximize the wine’s great potential. The initial impression of the wine is one of high energy, brightness, and ample structure. While not broad or massive, this vintage is incredibly flavorful, with appealing notes of red cherry, bramble, freshly baked bread, and Asian spices. It is mouthwatering on the entry, across the palate, and on the finish, which lasts for nearly a full minute. This is a wine that is generous and expressive right now, but, given the strength of its tannic backbone, will continue to develop and age for many years to come.
