Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2019
The Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) have owned and operated Château Pontet-Canet since 1975. It is classified as a 5eme Cru Classe. The Tesserons have vastly improved the quality of the Pontet-Canet wines which are now full-bodied and packed with ripe, chewy, black fruits and finely integrated tannins. The wines possesses marvelous ageing potential. The estate’s 78 hectares of vineyards are biodynamically farmed and planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%). Michel Rolland consults on their winemaking. The wine rests for 16-18 months 50% in new oak barrels, 35% in concrete amphoras, 15% in one wine oak barrels.
The 2019 displays a very attractive, intensely dark color with purple glints. The nose adds to the appeal, offering a magical array of aromatics ranging from graphite and cedar-wood notes to aromas of wild fruit. The depth of flavor on the palate is underpinned by soft tannins and lovely acidity. The finish, which reveals subtle smoky notes, is amazingly long.
