Bodegas Olivares “Altos de la Hoya” Monastrell 2020, Jumilla

Altos de la Hoya is impressively intense and powerful for its humble price point.  Monastrell, known as Mourvedre in France, is one of the only grapes that thrives in Jumilla’s Mediterranean heat.  Monastrell is native to this region, where the ungrafted old vines are planted three feet apart from one another so they don’t compete for the scant rainfall. A deep garnet color leads to scents of dark fruits. Look for flavors of blackberry jam layered with spices from 6 months of French oak aging.  This bold red is extra tasty paired with red meats and stews.
