Abbazia di Novacella Kerner, Alto Adige 2020

This is a delightful and lighthearted wine perfect for springtime sipping and for pairing with starters. You will be delighted as notes reminiscent of peaches, apricots, and tangerines waft from the glass.  On the palate, it is lively, dry, and sleek, with plenty of minerals.  If you are not familiar with Kerner, this is a terrific opportunity to get to know a new grape. Kerner is a specialty of Alto Adige; it is a crossing between Riesling and Schiava (a red grape!). Though Abbazia was founded in 1142 and is one of the oldest wineries in the world, the cellar is entirely modern. The Augustian monks not only grow grapes for winemaking, but also run a small school devoted primarily to studies of viticulture. The abbey’s reputation as a winery is stellar. You will want to drink this wine young for its charming  floral and fruity notes.
