97 points Wine Spectator

Packed with vivid black cherry, black currant and plum fruit, as well as iron, sanguine and tobacco accents, this red shows some power and tension, but also grace and balance. The lingering aftertaste features bright, ripe fruit and wild herbs. Best from 2027 through 2043. 2,000 cases made, 680 cases imported.

—Bruce Sanderson

Giancarlo Pacenti crafts lovely, traditionally styled Brunello. His “Pelagrilli” is produced from estate vineyards ranging from 25 to 35 years old, mostly on the north side of Montalcino. Following vinification, the wine ages in 225-liter French oak for 24 months prior to further aging in bottle. This 2019 possesses a medium garnet hue with a sheer rim. It wafts from the glass with expressive notes reminiscent of sour red cherries, juniper berries, freshly chopped firewood, and scorched orange peel. The palate offers layers of cherries and dark fruits. It has a medium body with finely grained tannins and a long finish. This classic Brunello from a good vintage is enjoyable now, especially with beef, and will age beautifully over the coming decade. This wine received 97 points in Wine Spectator. Regularly priced at $102 per bottle, this is quite a deal.
