Aged Albariño by Do Ferreiro reveals the power of the grape variety. A vertical flight from Boulder Wine Merchant.

Ask any serious wine professional working in the U.S. today what their favorite Albariño is and Do Ferreiro will invariably appear at the top of their list of best producers of the grape variety.

Credit where credit is due. The Mendéz family, grape growers at Do Ferreiro, literally put Albariño on the map when they first started to treat it as a variety capable of greatness. Gerardo Mendéz and his father Francisco were among the pioneering winemakers who helped to create the Rías Baixas appellation in Spain in the late 1980s.

The Albariño grapes for this iconic wine come from organically farmed vines that range in age from 20 to 120 years. Each of the estate’s more than 100 tiny parcels is farmed and harvested by hand. The resulting wines, grown in the sandy and decomposed granite soils of Rías Baixas, a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean, have remarkable depth and complexity — especially as they age.

For this week’s offering, we have put together a “vertical flight” (consecutive vintages) of wines from the 2012, 2013, and 2014 harvests (making the youngest of these wines nine years old!). As he tasted the three vintages, Brett was blown away by their freshness, clarity of fruit, and vibrant minerality – testament to the Mendéz family’s growing and winemaking practices.

Please note that these wines are not available separately. They can only be purchased in the vertical flight that we have put together for you.
