Taste the OG rosé from Provence: Domaine Ott.
Often called the world’s “most expensive rosé” and widely considered by experts to be a benchmark for the category, Domaine Ott changed the world when it began using high quality grapes to make rosé wines from Provence in the 20th century.
The winery’s founder, Marcel Ott, was the first to recognize rosé’s potential as a top fine wine. A visionary from the outset, he experimented with all kinds of grapes before settling on Grenache, a native grape variety of Provence, as the main grape he would use to create his world-class rosés.
He also realized that if he grew Grenache on the right soils — the clay- and limestone-rich soils of Provence — he could produce wines that could compete with the finest wines in the world.
The unique bottle shape he developed, inspired by the Cypress trees of Provence, was never adopted by Provençal winemakers as he had hoped. But it would go on to become an icon and one of the most recognizable bottles of the late 20th century.
The bottles transparent glass — a revolutionary innovation at the time — allowed the wine lover to see the beautiful color of the wine. This was another huge step forward in sharing the wines of Provence with the world.
The wines are no cheap date. Indeed, they are among the most expensive rosés ever made. But when you taste them, you will understand why these age-worthy wines are sought after by collectors from across the world.
