2022 Wieninger Wiener Gemischter Satz, Vienna

Producer Information: Fritz Wieninger (above) is widely considered the modern standard-bearer for Vienna’s historic wine culture. A pioneer in elevating Gemischter Satz from a local curiosity into one of Austria’s most distinctive appellations, Wieninger farms organically and emphasizes vineyard transparency and balance.

Region & Climate: Vienna is the only major world capital with significant commercial vineyards inside city limits. The region’s mix of limestone, loess, and sandy soils combined with warm days and cool nights creates whites with both aromatic complexity and freshness.

Vintage & Varieties: The 2022 vintage delivered vibrant acidity and excellent aromatic purity. Gemischter Satz is a traditional “field blend,” where multiple varieties are planted, harvested, and fermented together. Typical varieties include Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Traminer.

Tasting Notes: Citrus blossom, green apple, pear, and white pepper with subtle herbal and mineral notes. Crisp and energetic with layered texture and a refreshing finish.

Why It’s Special: Gemischter Satz is one of Europe’s oldest co-fermentation traditions, originally designed as a safeguard against difficult vintages and now celebrated for its complexity and harmony.

2024 Ingrid Groiss Rosé, Weinviertel

Producer Information: Ingrid Groiss has become one of Austria’s most admired growers for elegant, understated wines that prioritize purity and finesse over extraction or power. Her farming is meticulous, and her wines consistently reflect restraint and precision.

Region & Climate: Weinviertel, Austria’s largest wine region, is known for rolling hills of loess soils and a cool continental climate moderated by fresh northern air currents. These conditions preserve aromatic lift and natural acidity.

Vintage & Variety: The 2024 vintage is bright and refreshing. Typically based on Zweigelt with small portions of Pinot Noir or St. Laurent depending on the vintage.

Tasting Notes: Wild strawberry, red currant, citrus zest, and delicate floral notes. Dry and vibrant with crisp acidity and a clean mineral finish.

Why It’s Special: Groiss crafts rosé with the same seriousness and precision she applies to her white wines, resulting in a wine with remarkable balance and subtlety rather than overt fruitiness.

2023 Meinklang Grüner Veltliner, Burgenland

Producer Information: Meinklang is one of Austria’s pioneering biodynamic estates, operating as a holistic farm that integrates vineyards, livestock, grains, and biodiversity into a self-sustaining ecosystem. Their wines emphasize vitality, energy, and minimal intervention.

Region & Climate: Burgenland sits along the eastern border of Austria near Lake Neusiedl. The warm Pannonian climate is balanced by cooling winds and diverse soils, producing Grüner Veltliner with both ripeness and freshness.

Vintage & Variety: The 2023 vintage is lively and expressive. 100% Grüner Veltliner.

Tasting Notes: Green apple, lime zest, white pepper, and fresh herbs with subtle mineral undertones. Light-to-medium-bodied with crisp acidity and energetic lift.

Why It’s Special: Meinklang’s biodynamic farming and natural cellar approach create wines that feel remarkably vibrant and alive while remaining clean and precise.

2019 Stadlmann Traiskirchner Mandelhöh, Thermenregion

Producer Information: The Stadlmann family has produced wine in Austria’s Thermenregion since the 18th century and is regarded as one of the area’s benchmark traditional estates. Their wines emphasize elegance, longevity, and vineyard expression.

Region & Climate: The Thermenregion lies just south of Vienna, where limestone-rich soils and warm Pannonian influence create structured, aromatic wines with notable aging potential.

Vineyard & Variety: The Mandelhöh vineyard in Traiskirchen is a historic limestone site known for producing wines with pronounced minerality and finesse. Depending on bottling, Stadlmann often focuses on indigenous and traditional regional varieties such as Zierfandler or Rotgipfler.

Vintage: 2019 was an outstanding Austrian vintage, combining ripeness with freshness and exceptional balance.

Tasting Notes: Ripe orchard fruit, citrus oil, honeyed spice, and crushed stone with layered texture and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, savory, and mineral-driven.

Why It’s Special: Stadlmann remains one of Austria’s great traditional estates, crafting wines that beautifully capture the historic identity of the Thermenregion while aging gracefully for many years.
