Taste top Chardonnay by Paul Hobbs, California viticulture pioneer.
Often referred to as the “Steve Jobs of wine,” Paul Hobbs is considered one of California’s pioneers in creating terroir-driven wines with balance and nuance.
He came of age in the industry at a time when the wine critics ruled the scene with their scores. An expert in cask aging, the young Hobbs was hand-selected by Robert Mondavi as part of the Opus One team.
But after launching his own winery in the 1990s, Hobbs shifted his focus to site-expression, in other words, wines that reflect the place where they were raised. He often tells the story of growing up on a farm in upstate New York and first realizing that fruits grown in different parcels had different aromas and flavors. When most American winemakers were going for a “big, bold” style of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, he experimented with different grapes and different growing sites.
He also started traveling to South America where he became one of the first to recognize the potential of Malbec grown there. Today, he owns vineyards and wineries across California, Argentina, Spain, France, and Armenia.
On Wednesday, we will be pouring wines from both his flagship Paul Hobbs winery and his Crossbarn estate in California, including the Paul Hobbs Chardonnay 2022, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County $77.99.
We can’t wait to pour you the four wines below, each a favorite of Brett’s and our staff. Please join us!
