Taste the “Other Nebbiolo” with winemaker Giovanni Correggia, Thurs., 4/3, 5-7pm, complimentary.

You’ve probably heard of Barolo and Barbaresco. The high-end, collectible red wines grown in the respective appellation in the region of Piedmont in northwestern Italy. They are considered to be some of the best wines in the world.

But what a lot of folks don’t realize is that an appellation that borders Barolo (11 villages) and Barbaresco (four villages) also produces top Nebbiolo, the grape used to make Barolo and Barbaresco. We’re talking about Roero, a “Barolo- and Barbaresco-adjacent” area where fine wine grapes have been grown since the Middle Ages.

It’s important to note: It’s not as if the terroir of Barolo and Barbaresco ends at the appellation’s border. In fact, Roero and its more famous neighbors share soil types, exposure, and climate — all the things that make Nebbiolo such a unique expression of the place where it’s grown.

Similar to the Nebbiolo grown in the western village of Verduno (Barolo), the sandy in Roero soils make for wines that drink better in their youth than say the tightly wound wines of southern Barolo. Some would even say that this makes them an even greater value.

On Thursday, Giovanni Correggia will be pouring his family’s Roero Nebbiolo Riserva Val dei Preti ($42.98), one of the best values in Nebbiolo that can be found today.
