Maison Verget returns to Boulder Wine Merchant!
After a decade of being absent from the U.S. market, we are excited to announce that Maison Verget’s Mâconnais wines are available at Boulder Wine Merchant.
Verget is the négociant label of Jean-Marie Guffens of Guffens-Heynen.
Verget au Sud Chardonnay Vin de France 2022 ($24.98)
Verget Mâcon ‘Pierreclos En Tremblay’ 2022 ($40.98)
Verget Saint-Véran ‘Lieu (Inter)dit’ 2022 ($57.98)
Verget Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Aux Combes Vieilles Vignes’ 2021 ($77.00)
Jean-Marie Guffens started his Verget label in 1990. If you are not familiar with this tour de force in Burgundy’s Mâcon, he is quite a personality producing spectacularly delicious and sought-after wines. Guffens’ wines were often lauded by the press. When consumers could not get their hands on his wines and contacted him directly, his stock response was “I know that you can read, and that you can count to one hundred, but if you want to buy my wine, come and visit me.” And when Robert Parker told Guffens that he was one of the best three white winemakers in the world, his reply was “what a pity the other two are so far behind!”
Guffens’ cellars are located in Vergisson. He exclusively utilizes Chardonnay grapes that are hand-harvested, which is a rarity in the region. He also harvests in multiple passes, or tries, in order to ensure that individual blocks and rows are at optimal maturity. This is just one way in which he works to capture both vibrancy and volume. In his gravity flow winery, Guffens employs a mix of stainless steel, concrete tanks, and oak demi-muids. He ages his wines on their lees, which contribute complexity and texture while protecting the wines from oxidation.
We invite you to rediscover Guffen’s white Burgundies from his Verget label. They embody a fabulous harmony between tension, texture, ripeness, and clarity.
Supply is limited.
