Italy & Burgundy meet at Basta (Boulder Burgundy Festival).
Over the more than 15 years that Brett has been leading the Boulder Burgundy Festival (October 24-26), he’s experimented with different formats for tastings and events. Each year new festival partners have added different gastronomic dimensions to the beloved event.
This year, Brett decided to embrace his inner italophile: Why not combine the wines of Corton with earthy, homey Italian cuisine? After all, Italian “hearth” dining evokes the meals Brett has enjoyed on his many trips to Burgundy where the simplicity of the food is rivaled only by the rich flavors of the locally sourced ingredients.
He turned to chef Kelly Whitaker of Basta here in Boulder and asked him to create a family-style dinner inspired by wine country cookery.
Basta — meaning “enough” in Italian — was founded on a very simple idea: “One wood-fired oven evoking techniques both past and present.”
“There couldn’t be a better way to enjoy the wines of Burgundy,” says Brett, “than with a hearth-fired, family-style menu, just like so many memorable evenings I’ve spent in Burgundy with winemakers there.”
There is still availability for what Brett and chef Kelly are capping at 45 guests to ensure the intimacy of the gathering.
“After meeting with chef,” recalls Brett, “I knew we had found the right balance for these wines. I know our guests are going to enjoy it as much as I will!”
