Taste 4 Negronis this Friday, 9/20, 5-7pm. Complimentary.
This week is official Negroni week!
For those who don’t already know the cocktail, the basic recipe is equal parts gin, red vermouth, and Campari, with an orange peel garnish. But there are also countless variations (we’ll be pouring a classic Negroni and three alternate recipes this Friday; see below).
No one knows for certain where or when the cocktail was invented. And there are seemingly endless apocryphal origin stories (you can read them all in the Wikipedia entry for “Negroni”).
What we do know is that the earliest mentions of the cocktail date back to the 1920s in France and Italy.
But more important than when or where it first appeared: Who was drinking it?
The Negroni first became popular in Europe when it was adopted as the official cocktail of the Futurists. (N.B.: Not the Futurologists.) The Futurists, led by Italian artists and writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, were the parents of the historical avant-garde. They wanted to break with every tradition of the past, including Europeans’ love of wine. Not only did the Futurists drink Negronis. They also served it at dinners where “Cucina Futurista” (Futurist cuisine) was served. Futurist artist Fortunato Depero famously created ads for Campari. Check out this link to see a number of his works.
Join us on Friday as we taste a bit of Futurist history! We hope to see you then. Thanks for your support. We wouldn’t be here without you.
