Piedmont’s Timorasso, an age-worthy white from the land of reds.
Boulder Wine Merchant is pleased to present two unusual white wines from Piedmont, a land known primarily for its reds.
Derthona, La Chiara Timorasso 2022 $33.98
and
Derthona, La Colombera Timorasso 2020 $31.98
The Timorasso (tee-mohr-RAHS-soh) grape is believed to be one of Italy’s oldest varieties, with mentions stretching back as far as the 14th century.
But by the turn of the 20th century, it had been abandoned by Piedmont growers who favored red grapes like Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo. Even today, the Piedmontese drink red wine almost exclusively when they sit down for dinner.
In the 1980s, a group of forward-looking winemakers began planting it again in the hills around Tortona. Even though Tortona’s located about an hour east of Barolo and Barbaresco, the limestone- and clay-rich soils there are nearly identical to those found in La Morra, where Barolo is produced.
Derthona, the appellation name, is the ancient name for Tortona. Derthona is known for its deep minerality and classic notes of white stone fruit, honey, acacia, and chamomile. And the best news is that Derthona will age gracefully, becoming more nuanced and delicious along the way.
