Klinker Brick Albariño, Lodi, California 2023
The Felton family has been growing grapes in the Lodi region for six generations. Their ancestors had emigrated from Eastern Europe, eventually finding their way to Lodi, California. The family now farms large holdings throughout the area, growing mostly Zinfandel, some of which are the original vines planted by their forefathers. One of their newest and most exciting projects is Albarino grown in the Mokelumne River AVA. Albarino is well suited for the warm days and cool nights of this area and does especially well in the sandy loam soils. Bright floral and tropical notes jump from the glass with flavors of peaches, melon, and lemon followed by a crisp finish. A new and exciting wine coming out of California.
The Albariño grape is native to Galicia, the northwestern corner of Spain. As it has gained popularity over the last decade, California has doubled planted acreage- up to 500 acres today. It is fun to get to know what this grape tastes like when grown in a warmer region such as Lodi. Enjoy fruitful aromas of apple and peach accented by flowers. On the palate, this Californian is noticeably plumper than an Albariño from Rias Baixas, yet still has plenty of vibrant acidity to offer.
