La Colombera ‘Derthona’ Timorasso, Piedmont Italy 2020
Derthona is the old name for the city of Tortona. Timorasso is the rare white grape variety that best represents the hills around Tortona, as it is native to here. The white wine it produces is structured and elegant, capable of aging for a surprisingly long time in a bottle. On the nose the young wine shows notes of white peach, honey, acacia, hawthorn blossom, and chamomile, developing smoky and mineral notes with age. The fresh acidity of the wine allows it to improve in the bottle for many years. Elisa Semino of La Colombera is a brilliant and enthusiastic proponent of Timorasso, and of this region, the Colli Tortonesi; and she and her brother and father grow and vinify one of the best examples of it. This single vineyard wine is focused and minerally, with reserved notes of peach and honey. It was farmed organically.
