Isole e Olena “Cepparello” 2019 Toscana IGT

The name ‘Isole e Olena’ came about in the 1950s when the De Marchi family purchased and combined two adjoining estates, ‘Isole’ and ‘Olena’, each of which dated back hundreds of years. The estate is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region at the midway point between Siena and Florence. Perched atop the hillsides of western Chianti Classico, just north of the village of Castellina, Isole e Olena lays claim to some of the most prized vineyards in the region.

Since taking over his family’s estate in the late 1970s, fourth-generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi has transformed Isole e Olena into a powerhouse. In 1980, Paolo pioneered his flagship wine, Cepparello, made from 100% Sangiovese. This wine has been classified as a “Super Tuscan”, as it violated the traditional Chianti Classico regulations that include a white grape variety into the final blend. As a result of Paolo’s successful technique, this wine set the standard for the pure Sangiovese movement.

Cepparello is produced from the estate’s best fruits from their vineyards in Barberino Val d’Elsa, in the northern part of Chianti Classico.  It is is 100% organically grown Sangiovese aged for 18-20 months in French oak barrels. Cepparello is made in a style that emphasizes finesse over power, especially with bottle age.  This beautiful and detailed wine can age for 20+ years, especially from a vintage as strong as 2019. It is enjoyable now with decanting.

The 2019 vintage received 96 points in Vinous from Antonio Galloni both in September 2021 and in July 2022.
