Federico Curtaz “Gamma” Etna Bianco, 2020, Italy
Born and raised in a family of winemakers, Federico Curtaz is originally from Piedmont, where he worked as an agronomist for none other than Angelo Gaja. Since then, he has traveled and worked as a consultant across Italy sharing his expertise, including several collaborations in Sicily. The island ended up captivating his interest and he made producing wine here his life’s work. Curtaz’s “Gamma” is his unoaked expression of Carricante. This graceful wine hails from high altitude, terraced vineyards on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. look for layers of of orchard fruits accented by wild herbs with delicious concentration, richness, and elegance. It is dry and medium-bodied with a high acidity and a persistent finish. At risk of sounding cliché, “Gamma” is impressively Burgundian.
