Molise is a small wine region in southern Italy surrounded by other larger and better known regions. Only 2% of Molise’s wine production qualifies as DOC, the Italian system of classifying superior wines. While this may seem discouraging for producers in Molise, winemakers have embraced their role of producing non-traditional Italian wines. In that spirit, Di Majo Norante planted 13 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972. The result has been a tremendous success, making a wine full of baked plums and black fruits complemented by undertones of cassis, tobacco leaf, leather, and sweet spice.
