Azelia Barolo 2019

Azelia is located in the commune of Castiglione Falletto in the heart of the Barolo DOCG, between the hard and powerful eastern valley, and the soft and supple western valley. Established in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino, the small farm began to produce everything the family needed. Luigi Scavino is the fourth generation winemaker and is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo. Luigi continues to apply what he learned from his father, together with suitable new ideas and respect for tradition. Wines are made from 100% estate organically-grown fruit. Vineyard management is rigorous due to the belief that the wine is made in the vineyard, not the cellar. Azelia is known for producing Barolo that possesses contemporary qualities that are rooted in tradition. It’s as if the wines have all the elegance of the ‘old ways’ in combination with beautiful fruit and concentration.

Their Barolo “normale” bottling brings together Nebbiolo grapes from the growing areas of Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba. The wine ages 24 months in large casks.

2018 Baroli are fruitful and forward-drinking, with relatively softer tannins.  This 2019 from Azelia was rated 93 points by Wine Spectator.
