Rich Red from Southern Italy

2004 Tenuta Ponte Carazita Rosso, Irpinia, Italy
$107.90/cs • $9.99/btl.

Aglianico-based reds from Campania are among Italy's most admired. The 2004 "Carazita" Irpinia Rosso is from Irpinia (or Hirpinia, from hirpus, meaning "wolf"), a formerly wild and still wooded hill region above Naples. The best reds are made from the Aglianico grape, and the Carazita is a beautifully aromatic, rich yet approachable young red--a nuanced, serious Italian wine that you'll be tempted to enjoy often at this SALE PRICE.

The wine is exceptionally perfumed, with a range of expression that recalls fresh "forest floor" scents and herb-infused, sun-baked fruits. On the palate, it comes across as a strapping young red, suitable for grilled meats and vegetables, pizza or other richly flavored fare. The wine is forward-far from austere-and hence is reminiscent of rich Tuscan reds. Its lively, bold black and red fruits plus its juicy, palate-cleansing character will delight your taste buds. If you like robust Italian reds, or if you like wines that compare to others costing TWICE AS MUCH or more, you should try this splendid Campanian red.
