Lovely Portuguese Red

(2006) Esperão Alandra Tinto, Vinho de Mesa, Portugal
SALE $107.90/case • $9.99/btl

Although (indeed perhaps because) the wines of Portugal remain relatively unknown compared to those of France, Italy and even Spain, they continue to represent some of the best values on the market. Good Portuguese reds provide a delicious combination of rich aromas, full flavors, and a delectable, spicy style. One such wine is the Alandra Red from Heredade do Esporão.

Alandra red is a blend of the native Portuguese grape varieties Moreto and Castelão grown in the Alentejo, east of Lisbon. As a Vinho de Mesa under Portuguese wine law, it does not have a vintage, but it is largely from the 2006 harvest. A deep ruby in color, the Alandra shows ample black cherry fruit with hints of raspberry, violets, allspice and black-pepper. It's a smooth, easy-drinking, medium-bodied red with round, rich fruit, a soft, earthy fullness and delicate hints of herbs and spices that linger at the finish. Serve this smooth and spicy red with your favorite red meat dishes, spicier stews, grilled foods, or medium to full flavored cheeses. The Alandra is a perfect example of the fine value to be found among the wines of Portugal.
