The source of this intriguing white is Argentina's Famatina Valley, in the high altitude La Rioja Province. The grape variety is the Torrontés, Argentina’s most distinctive white wine grape. The Torrontés is a natural crossing of the native Criolla Chica grape and the Muscat of Alexandria – a viticultural “love child” of sorts. Las Lajas is a relatively new producer on American retail shelves, but it’s clear that they have the skill and quality grapes necessary to make fine wines. Their 2009 Torrontés is absolutely delicious!
The 2009 Las Lajas Torrontés is a stellar white wine in its own right and a great buy for a wine of this quality. The bouquet is forward and captivating. Lovely scents of citrus, melon, and peach-like fruit are enhanced by delicate violet and orange blossom floral tones - rather reminiscent of a fine Viognier. On the palate, this delightful Torrontés veritably bursts forth with an explosion of luscious melon and citrus flavors. This exuberant mélange of lemon, tangerine and melon is underscored by a subtle creaminess and a minerally-clean, bracing and dry finish.
Its clean and refreshing demeanor makes the '09 Las Lajas Torrontés a good choice to pair with spicy recipes - giving the palate a refreshing break from the heat of the food. It would also be a fine companion for a wide range of Asian recipes.
